TRANSFORMING HABITS TO THINK ABOUT TRAINING: Example of the RenovUp transnational project

Extract from the forthcoming publication “EXPERIENCE AS TRANSFORMATION: For an epistemology of experience”. UNESCO and ICP (France) Authors: Florence Tardif-Bourgoin, University of Paris Nanterre, CREF Jérôme Mbiatong, UPEC, LIRTES

For the participants in the RenovUp project, the challenge is to “reverse” the usual ways of thinking about training through the objectives of action, which are the formative exploitation of learning in work situations and the analysis of work situations to improve the arrangements for the professionalisation of site managers and team leaders. The assumption was made by the two researchers involved in this field that the involvement of professionals in this project was likely to constitute a source of learning and innovation for the contributors involved (partner organisations in the RenovUp project, training centres and companies having participated in the reflections and experimental actions). Attention was paid to the moments of transformation in the account of the respective experiences according to the different functions occupied by the people interviewed (management, deputy management, director of studies, training, coordination, design) in the partner countries: how does involvement in an international educational project contribute to the professional development of its contributors? The field study highlights how entering the experience of others can be a personal step towards change, illustrating the collaboration in this particular project. Eight interviews were conducted with RenovUp project collaborators, including four in France and four abroad (three national project pilots and a researcher specialising in the development of vocational education).

Whatever their position in the project, the contributors unanimously shared the approach of using real-life situations to guide the revision of teaching models. Although this approach was initially a novelty for some, as emphasised by a regional director and the foreign contributors, who pointed out the unusual aspect of interaction with companies prior to the creation of a training project, most of them had nevertheless experienced this practice in previous European projects.

These habits have formed a common and shared foundation which has facilitated collaboration between the partners throughout the RenovUp project: “The simulations are there, they are given by the companies, we can see that there are recurring problems…Starting from a real situation…We know that it’s everyday stuff”. (French educational manager). According to the people we spoke to, the construction of the reference frameworks involves a great deal of work on “breaking down” recurring themes into training modules.

The habit of commitment can be linked to other experiences in the field of training, such as the fact of having been involved in writing certification situations as part of a national project on work-linked training (French educational manager) or of having participated in the creation of teaching and positioning tools to develop observation grids in real situations (national coordinator of the RenovUp project). According to the same co-ordinator, it can also be linked to non-teaching experiences such as organising technical activities to manage the project and conducting interviews with operators in the renovation sector.

Gathering needs based on actual activity means taking into account the local challenges of the training provided, from one region to another as well as from one country to another (French Regional Director) and, above all, it means having a good knowledge of the practices of trainers in order to support them in changing their practices (French Education Manager and French Regional Director in his capacity as a former CFA director): “Already work-linked training is disconnected, we need to reconnect the CFA with the company…”.

These issues and transformations relate to the specific national features of the political and legal context, the structuring of the sector and environmental standards: “In the first phase of RenovUp, we had to do a documentary search, analyse all the standards, legislation, all the changes that the European Union is putting in place to deal with climate change”. (National coordinator of the RenovUp project in his country).

The responsibilities and practices of trainers, site managers and team leaders are recurrent in the comments made by contributors when it comes to their perception of the situation.

The Erasmus+ Agency assesses and validates the RenovUp project

Au début du mois de novembre, l’Agence Erasmus+ France Education / Formation a rendu ses conclusions sur le projet européen RenovUp.

With a score of 85/100, the RenovUp project obtains the Good Practice Label for the quality of the project implementation as well as the achievements of its objectives.

In accordance with the provisions of your grant agreement, your final report has been subjected to a qualitative evaluation demonstrating the quality of the implementation of the project, for which you have obtained a score of 85/100, enabling you to benefit from the Good Practice Label.
The RenovUp project aims to provide VET establishments with a training scheme for two related target groups ,team leaders and site managers operating in the construction and public works sector, and more specifically in building renovation.
The project has achieved the planned objective of providing a complete system covering the entire work system-training system chain, including the positioning of learners, support for trainers, assessment of what has been learnt, and the implementation of local partnerships.
The innovation brought about by the RenovUp project was to initiate the construction of all the systems to be designed through an in-depth analysis of work situations rather than proceeding with conventional engineering based on a set of reference systems.
A quality management system has been put in place.
The partnership functioned coherently throughout all phases of the project, and the results were co-constructed by the entire consortium.

The division of tasks and responsibilities has been balanced.
In addition to traditional engineering work based on the identification of skill blocks, the project has led to the design and testing in each country of real training systems aimed at the target profiles and the trainers who will support them.
The validation of prior learning for both these audiences through a system of Open Badges has been carefully designed, developed and tested.
The impact on the organisations and participants is well explained, and it will improve the quality of their activities and their ability to cooperate internationally.
The project is creating a major synergy between the educational and professional sectors.
The introduction and testing of training based on the formative exploitation of work situations has strengthened the links between the organisations and the region’s SMEs working in the sector.
The organisations have acquired tools for analysing work situations and a methodology for incorporating the results into modular, customised training courses centred on the needs of individuals and companies.
The Agency encourages the partnership to continue its work in the directions indicated in the report.
The partners intend to continue training team leaders and site managers in the various countries (as well as training their instructors).
In addition to the outputs of the project itself, the partners have identified 7 thematic blocks which correspond to a methodology developed as part of the project, which are transferable and have the potential to be applied to other sectors and other audiences, and which can be implemented in future Erasmus+ or other projects.

Closing RenovUp

The Erasmus+ RenovUp project ended last September, an opportunity for CCCA-BTP to look back at its objectives and achievements, as well as the reasons of its creation.

The project pilot CCCA-BTP organised, on June 15th, 2023 at BTP CFA Loire-Atlantique (Saint-Herblain) the closing seminar of the European project RenovUp along with the four partner organisations. This event was the opportunity to present the outcomes of the project, which aimed to support the professionalisation of site managers and team leaders on renovation sites.

In light of the environmental, climate and energy challenges the Members States of the European Union have to face, buildings renovation is of major importance. Team and site management, changes in regulations, safety standards, emergence of new materials and construction methods, they all call for the ongoing professionalisation of site managers and team leaders exercising on renovation sites. As Jacques-Olivier Hénon, Director of Training Policies and Pedagogical Innovation at CCCA-BTP, underlined “the RenovUp project was designed and launched 3 years ago in order to anticipate this evolution. Five European VET stakeholders in construction trades joined forces, co-financed by Erasmus+ : CCCA-BTP in France, FORMEDIL in Italy, FLC Asturias for Spain, Lukasiewicz ITE for Poland and PEDMEDE for Greece”.

Building renovation sites as work places with specific skills requirements

Eleni Damianou (GR), Jolanta Religa (PL) and Marek Lawinski (FR) wrote an article for the Polish Journal of Continuing Education…

The article presents the results of research carried out by the international partnership of the Erasmus+ project “RenovUp”. The project focuses on the development of the competences of the middle management on building renovation sites. The research stage aimed at the analysis of the specificity of renovation projects that affect the functions of site managers and team leaders, the identification of specific skills expected of them by employers, as well as defining recommendations and guidelines for future work on the professionalization processes of these groups of employees in the construction sector.
There appears to be an agreement the five project countries (FR, GR, IT, ES, PL) regarding the current needs and challenges of the building renovation sector. It is acknowledged and understood that any designed training scheme should take into consideration real work life cases.
Such cases along with a work-based-learning approach, within a framework of recognized learning outcomes (e.g. in the form of Open Badges) are set to assist professionals in the path of their professional development and advance.

Transforming by doing

Marek Lawinski intervened during the International Biennale on Education, Occupational Training and Practices in September 2021…

The 2021 edition of the International Biennale on Education, Occupational Training and Practices was held on September 22/23/24/25th, 2021 at Catholic Institute of Paris (ICP). In this context, CCCA-BTP intervened for two communications and animated a symposium as well as two workshops, among which the workshop animated by Marek Lawinski on the topic “Transforming by doing”.

The intervention of Marek Lawinski, head of International Cooperation Unit at CCCA-BTP, during the 2021 International Biennale on Education, Occupational Training and Practices on the topic “Transforming by doing”, was translated into an article of Education Permanente magazine, international reference on adult training.

The workshop was designed as a contribution, based on CCCA-BTP’s experiences, to a better understanding of Erasmus+ projects’ groups ways of functioning, as communities of production and learning (Clénet, J., 2020). 3 European projects, implemented between 2014 and 2021, were chosen as they have in common the design and implementation of professionalisation paths for trainers and teachers in technical areas (Certivet) as well as as for site managers and team leaders (ConstructyVET and RenovUp). For each one of these Erasmus+ projects, the implementation phase is long enough (between 2 and 3 years) to observe the production processes of common results and the evolution of occupational skills activated by partners in this context.
